The Bonanza range, which became an iconic piece of furniture in the 1970s and 1980s, is still a favourite in many homes. The dark brown and, more rarely, dark green furniture now evokes a nostalgic mood, but with a little creativity and modern styling touches, it can be transformed into a truly unique work of art. This is demonstrated by my recent work, in which I transformed a combing table into a modern vintage piece at the request of a client.
I worked with the original character of the table to give it a fresh, contemporary look. I used HH chalk paint in a shade of Cactus Green for the base colour, which is both elegant and eye-catching. This colour breathes life into the old furniture while maintaining its classic feel.
On the top of the furniture I applied a parrot motif using a special image transfer technique. This detail not only adds a touch of cheerfulness but also gives the table a unique character. I used a pittorico technique to blend the edges of the image with the background, so that it blends harmoniously with the aesthetics of the table as a whole. To further enhance the decoration, I have placed stencil patterns on the surface of the table edge, highlighted in gold to create a subtly shimmering, elegant effect.
The turned parts and edges are also highlighted with gold, giving the details even more emphasis while further enhancing the vintage style. As a finishing touch, I sealed the surface with a water-based silk gloss parquet finish to make the furniture not only aesthetically pleasing, but also durable and timeless.
The end result is a beautiful, modern vintage table that has already found a new home with a client who has several pieces of furniture I have restored to decorate his home. This unique piece perfectly combines nostalgia with today's trends, and is a great example of how to turn an old piece of furniture back into a lovable object that can be the centre of attention.
